Urland is no ordinary landscape architecture consultancy. In fact, they work in areas and with challenges that few architectural colleagues would take on. Urland means "Primordial land" in Danish, hinting at their purpose of working with strategy and development of land outside the typical urban grid. These are rural areas typically characterised by de-growth and stagnation, where the land holds little value in its current state and needs to be transformed in a responsible way. Unlike cities, which consist of valuable real-estate, infrastructure and recreational spaces and guided by strict planning laws, the countryside is a fragmented patchwork of land without a plan.
As the world faces growing energy, food, and environmental challenges, there is an urgent need to rethink how land can be used in better ways — ways that benefit the environment, and support local communities as well as national interests. This is the mission of Urland: To unleash the power and potential of the open land. Kraften i det åbne land, in Danish.
Primordial Power (Urkraften, in Danish) was an idea that kept surfacing in our initial conversations around Urland's purpose and proposition. It captured perfectly their unique philosophy of unlocking all-important synergy between soul and strategy of the landscape, thereby leading to more future orientated and responsible development.
